Jochen Magyar, a Belgian interior architect and furniture designer

Jochen Magyar is a Belgian interior architect and furniture designer whose work moves between art, sculpture, and furniture. A dialogue between form and technique, silence and time.

In the picturesque village of Bolderberg, surrounded by nature and the Zolder racetrack, Jochen Magyar grew up between two worlds: art and engineering.

“As a child I was always drawing, crafting, building. I never decided to become a designer,” he says. “It just evolved naturally. I have to create, otherwise I feel restless.”

Today he is known as the founder of Okyo, his studio for interior architecture and total concepts. But now he surprises with the launch of his first piece of furniture: The Easy Chair.

The path toward design

After completing an artistic education at the Art School in Genk, he specialized in spatial design, interior architecture, and architectural studies.

During his training at Sint-Lukas / LUCA School of Arts, taught by Michael Verheyden, he learned to think in terms of concepts, proportions, and materials.

In Sars-Poteries, France, he immersed himself in glass art. “That’s where I learned what light can do to a material.”

Later he worked in studios focusing on hospitality and boutique interiors, and for a furniture maker producing pieces for Vincent Van Duysen.

The move toward furniture design

In 2009 he founded Okyo, with which he has since realized countless homes, practices, boutiques, and hospitality projects.

Yet something kept lingering. “In an interior you almost always design for someone else, you translate a personality. But with a piece of furniture it’s different: you start from yourself.”

“Without boundaries, without compromises. Using the finest materials and an obsessive attention to detail and luxurious comfort. Honest, pure, Belgian. Perfect down to the smallest detail.”

The creation of the Easy Chair

For more than ten years, he filled sketchbooks with lines and ideas.

“I began leafing through my old sketchbooks again and suddenly found fragments I had once set aside. When I brought them together, the image made sense. It was as if the Easy Chair had always existed, it just needed to find its form.”

The chair received a solid wooden base built from pure cylinders, both structural and serene.

The folds in the leather appear spontaneous, yet every crease is hand-shaped with care and intention.

The Easy Chair is entirely handmade in Belgium, each piece made to order, numbered, and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by Jochen Magyar.

A piece that endures

At home, one of the first prototypes stands in his reading corner, beside the fireplace, among records and books.

“The Easy Chair marks a new chapter, the beginning of something that feels closer to myself than ever before.”
